A standout performer on the opera stage, American mezzo-soprano Alexandra Rodrick is by turns a fiercely dominating force and a deeply sensitive storyteller. Lauded by Opera News for her "especially healthy young voice," Ms. Rodrick has distinguished herself as a fearless singing actress with powerful vocal facility.
During the 2018-2019 season, Ms. Rodrick debuted the role of Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni with Chautauqua Opera, and reprised the role with Baltimore Concert Opera, as well as appearing at Vero Beach Opera in a concert of bel canto repertoire. Miss Rodrick also returned for a second season with VEROZA Japan to sing Mercédès and cover the title role in Carmen under the baton of Maestro Seiji Ozawa. In the spring of 2020, Ms. Rodrick will make her debut with San Diego Opera, singing Berta and covering Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia.
In the 2017/18 season, Ms. Rodrick performed the role of Angelina in La Cenerentola with The Atlanta Opera on their Studio Tour, and with Opéra Louisiane. Ms. Rodrick covered the same role while singing Tisbe with Opera Delaware, a performance praised as "nothing short of excellent" (Whyy.org). She also debuted the role of Cherubino in Le Nozze di Figaro with Point Loma Opera Theater, made her debut as Roggiero in Tancredi with Baltimore Concert Opera, and appeared as La Ciesca in Gianni Schicchi/Buoso’s Ghost with Opera Delaware.
During her tenure as a Resident Artist at the Opera Institute at Boston University, Ms. Rodrick made several role debuts, including Hermia in A Midsummer Night's Dream, which was described by critics as "fantastic" and "in a word, perfect" (The New England Theatre Geek; The Boston Music Intelligencer). She also appeared as Dorabella in Cosi fan tutte, Anna I in Kurt Weill's Seven Deadly Sins, Le Prince Charmant in Cendrillon, and Carmen in La tragédie de Carmen. In a collaboration between Beth Morrison Projects and Boston University, she sang the role of the Wife in Scott Wheeler’s Naga of the Ouroboros Trilogy.
In 2016, Ms. Rodrick was an Apprentice Artist at Des Moines Metro Opera, where she covered the role of Orphée in Orphée et Eurydice. The previous year, Ms. Rodrick made her international debut singing Rosina in Il barbiere di Siviglia with Opera Tijuana. In 2014, Ms. Rodrick was a Young Artist at Aspen Opera Theater, where she sang Mercédès in Carmen, and an Apprentice Artist with Green Mountain Opera Festival, where she sang Bianca in Britten's The Rape of Lucretia, a performance extolled as "richly expressive" (The Barre Montpelier Times Argus). As a Studio Artist with Wolf Trap Opera in 2013, she performed the role of Flora in La Traviata with the National Symphony Orchestra.
Ms. Rodrick is a 2018 recipient of an encouragement award from the Career Bridges Foundation and was selected to represent the United States in the final rounds of the 37th International Hans Gabor Belvedere Singing Competition. In 2017, she was a winner of the Palm Springs Opera Guild International Vocal Competition and a finalist in the Mildred Miller International Voice Competition, a 2016 finalist and recipient of an encouragement award from the Deborah Voigt Vero Beach Opera Foundation Inaugural International Vocal Competition, and the recipient of the prestigious Phyllis Curtin Award at Boston University. Ms. Rodrick was a winner of the 2015 Musical Merit Competition of Greater San Diego, and in 2014 was the first place winner of both the La Jolla Symphony and Chorus Young Artist Competition and the Susan and Virginia Hawk Memorial Scholarship Competition. In 2013, she won first place in the Metropolitan National Council Auditions, San Diego District, and was the recipient of an encouragement award from the MONC Western Regionals.
Ms. Rodrick splits her time between New York City and San Diego and enjoys long distance running, coffee shop hopping, and exploring new cities. She is a lover of wildlife and a devoted member and volunteer at the San Diego Zoo, where she can often be found on her days off at home in San Diego.
